Q & A: Is God to be Praised for Everything—Good or Bad?

Answer:

No. The Word of God does not teach that we should give God praise for things that He is not the source of. For instance, God doesn’t create confusion, sickness, strife, death, disaster and destruction. Nowhere does the Bible teach us to thank God for what Satan has done.

Although we don’t praise God for all things, we are to give Him praise in all things. First Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

What this means is we can give God praise no matter what kind of situation we are in. We do not give God thanks or praise for a temptation or a negative situation, because He is not the author of those things (John 10:10). Rather, we give God thanks for providing a way of escape and for those good things He has provided (1 Corinthians 10:13).

As we read the four Gospels we find that Jesus did not give thanks for sickness, death, murder, etc. He corrected these disasters. Therefore, we do not give thanks to God for Satan’s activities. According to 1 Corinthians 15:57 and 2 Corinthians 2:14, we are to give God thanks for the victory!
