GROWING up as a child in the Church, I heard the story of Jabez taken certain stage in some churches and denominations. Some preach and teach that God changed the name of Jabez when he prayed. But beloved there is nothing like that in the holy Bible. If God changed his name, which name did God give him? Our focal text (1 Chronicles 4:10) explains the first part of 1 Chronicles 4:9 which says “And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren…” So our focal text explains what he did to become more honourable than his brethren.
He prayed to God and He granted his request. We didn’t read that God changed his name. But what did God change? God changed the meaning or revelation behind his name which meant sorrow or grief unto “more honourable”. That’s why verse nine says “He was more honourable.” Beloved, the revelation or meaning of a name matters more than the name itself. For instance, if your name is Diana, and they say it means “an evil goddess”. You don’t have to buy into that revelation or meaning because you are in Christ.
If the meaning doesn’t bear the character of Christ or truth of God’s word, you can change the meaning to reflect your identity in Christ. As a New Creation, you are in charge. Your encounter with Christ and His word gives you a glorious identity, so if that identity isn’t glorious, change it. You are heirs with God and joint-heirs with Christ, don’t live by fables and fairytales (Rom 8:17). Choose to live in truth based on the revelation of God’s word. The rich grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always.
PRAYER
I am not moved by what I hear, see or circumstances. I humbly submit my decisions under the authority and revelation of God’s word. My identity in Christ influences the revelation behind my name. I advance and make progress. I trash every limitation whatsoever in the Mighty Name of Jesus Christ. Amen !
