The Church at Corinth at the time that Apostle Paul wrote our focal text was facing a particular challenge. And that particular issue even caused Apostle Paul and the Church to grieve (2 Cor 2:4). Upon much tears and admonishment, he informed the Church: “so that now instead you should rather forgive and comfort him. This will keep him from being overwhelmed by excessive grief to the point of despair.” (2 Cor 2:7). He further continued in our focal text preaching forgiveness. This attitude exhibited by the Apostle holds a greater revelation worthy of emulation.
*First, we are admonished to forgive anyone who offends the Church as a corporate body.* The Church should not hold grudges with the person. Secondly, the individual members of the Church including leaders should also learn to forgive such folks. Yes, don’t overstretch whoever offends you without forgiveness. And the reason for walking in forgiveness towards one another is that lest Satan should take advantage of us. In other words, so that we may not be exploited by Satan. The Greek rendition opines “so that Satan will not make a gain of us or defraud us”.
Not forgiving someone can make Satan take advantage of you or exploit you. Satan always seeks a breeding ground to destroy someone. He always takes the leakage you give him. Another version says so that we may not be outsmarted by Satan. Therefore when you engage in forgiveness, you are rather outsmarting the devil. Yes, we have been destined in Christ to be smarter than the devil. Through unforgiveneness, Satan can fill and destroy your heart with grief and bitterness. So forgive others as Christ forgave you. Allow God’s word to open your eyes and you’ll always outsmart the evil one; for you are the light of the world. The rich grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always.
PRAYER
_Father of lights and truth, I thank You for the enlightenment in Your unfailing word. I graciously choose to forgive anyone who has offended me in one way or the other. I refuse to hold grudges and bitterness in my heart against anyone. As you forgive me, I freely forgive. I refuse to give advantage to the devil. For I am not ignorant of his schemes. I outsmart every strategies of his in the Mighty Name of Jesus Christ. Amen !_
